Presenter Inge Diepman talks to Gilles Erkens (Deltares/UU) about the mechanisms in the soil that are related to peat decomposition and greenhouse gas emissions, and how these mechanisms are researched. What processes occur in the soil, what variables play a role in these processes, and why is it important to understand these processes in order to arrive at solutions? In the field reports, Inge Diepman goes into the field with Mariet Hefting (Utrecht University) to take soil samples in Lange Weide, and is given a tour of the Utrecht University lab where the samples are undergo further research.
